The organisers of the Carten 100 - Cardiff to Tenby charity cycle ride have postponed the event until September.
“As the cases of COVID-19 continue to rise, we are responding to the advice provided by the UK Government and have taken the decision to reschedule CARTEN 100,” said a spokesperson for the ride.
“Whilst we’d never thought this would happen for the second year in a row, as always, your safety is our priority.”
For the first time in 15 years, organisers were forced to postpone the ride in 2019 due to poor weather conditions forecast for the day, with Storm Hannah hitting Wales. It was put back for a month.
“With just over 2,000 riders set to be on the road on May 2, we could pose a potential and unnecessary burden on our already stretched emergency services,” continued the spokesperson, confirming that a new date has been secured for Saturday, September 19.
“Since Carten 100 began, these services have supported us throughout our planning phases to the main events, providing advice and peace of mind to all. We value these individuals and organisations and appreciate that they will already be working at their limits for the next few months. We don’t feel our ride is a priority under the current circumstances.
“We know that you have been training hard in preparation for the big day; and once again, we’ve not come to this decision lightly and value every one of our volunteers, riders, family and friends and we hold a duty to ensure we’re not putting anyone at risk.
“Each year, you travel from across Wales and beyond to support the ride and together we’ve raised over 1 million pounds for a variety of fantastic charities supporting individuals in need. On this note, we’d like to remind you to be kind in this uncertain period.
“Use your morning cycle to pick up a pint of milk for your neighbour, check on family and friends in the upcoming months and keep yourselves safe!” they added.
All entries will be transferred to the new event date, and if for any reason you are unable to make it, the current refund policy will stand and has been extended to March 31.
