CUSTOMERS of a beloved takeaway in St Clears were ‘devastated’ and ‘incredibly sad’ to hear of its closure on account of rising costs and ‘increasing pressures on small businesses.’

Within an hour of George’s Fish & Chips of St Clears announcing their imminent closure on their Facebook page, the comments section quickly filled up with understanding sorrow, gratitude and best wishes.

“After many years, tomorrow will be the final time we open the doors of our fish & chip shop,” read the announcement from Tom and team on Friday, May 15.

“This industry has changed massively over the last few years. Rising costs across the board, increasing pressures on small businesses, and the challenges faced by independent shops have made things harder than ever. It’s been an incredibly difficult decision, but unfortunately the time has come for us to say goodbye.

“We want to thank all our wonderful customers for the loyalty, kindness and support you’ve shown us over the years. We truly couldn’t have done it without you, and we’ll always be grateful for every visit, every chat and every order.

“A huge thank you also goes to all our amazing staff, past and present, for all your hard work, dedication and friendship. You’ve all been a massive part of the journey.”

From providing fidget toys to catering for coeliac disease, it is not hard to see what a loss this will be to the community: “The best fish and chips for miles, you will be a hard act to follow,” said one well-wisher; another commented: “We really appreciate what you and your family have done for the St Clears community.”

One business owner added: “From one small local business to another, I completely understand your position. It’s so hard out there right now and so many of us are at breaking point.”
