The Tenby Lugger ‘Heritage’ was unveiled at a naming ceremony at the resort’s harbour on Saturday.
‘Heritage’ is a replica of the Lugger ‘Seahorse’ - originally built in 1895, the only one of these boats for which scale drawings exist.
It was constructed by students at MITEC during the Rising Tide project. After the end of this project the incomplete hull and materials for completion were handed over to West Wales Maritime Heritage Society who undertook to finish the job.
This Society completed the work in July and carried out sea trials from their Yard in Front Street Pembroke Dock.
“The voyage to Tenby was to enable the ‘naming and blessing’ ceremony by the Vicar of St Mary’s and for inspection by the sponsors,” said Stuart Asmanof the West Wales Maritime Heritage Society
“As the Lugger sailed into Tenby she was welcomed by the Sailing Club’s Commodore and accompanied in by a flotilla of local craft, and remained in the Harbour until Wednesday, before sailing back to Pembroke Dock, where visitors may see her in the Maritime Museum,” he added.
The Lugger will sail primarily on the Haven in future but it is hoped that further visits to Tenby will be undertaken.
