A sixth form geology student at Pembroke School is appealing for support after securing a place on an Arctic expedition in the summer with the British Schools Exploring Society.
"These places are very limited in number and open to students from all over the UK," explained Benjamin Hickling, of Stackpole.
"I have just attended the briefing for the expedition and I am the only student from Wales in my group," he continued.
"I will be departing on July 22 and will be based inside the Artic Circle for five weeks.
"The expedition will enhance my studies in the sixth form and beyond, as I am hoping to study environmental geology at university. I will be learning to live and operate in an Arctic wilderness.
"This is not only a personal development experience, but also a scientific expedition, including glaciology, photography, geology, wildlife surveys and environmental engineering projects, as well as ground-breaking scientific research on humans.
During the expedition, Benjamin will be involved in mountaineering, crossing massive glacial crevasses and trekking through the Arctic wilderness.
In order to participate in this, each candidate has to raise the sum of £4,500 to cover the cost of travel, survival equipment rations and the funding of the necessary support.
He added: "I would greatly appreciate any contribution towards this sum. I will happily provide a detailed report and photographic evidence of my time in the Arctic circle."
In the meanwhile, in order to raise this sum, Benjamin will be doing a sponsored walk covering 48km, pool marathon, quiz night and sponsored cycle.
Anyone who would like to help Benjamin in his fundraising challenge is asked to contact him on 01646 672043.
