Sir, In 1983 I purchased Seagarth in St. Julians Street. Shortly afterwards, I bought at auction in Carmarthen a painting by one of the Allen family. It was a view from what is now known as Allen’s Garden of the North Beach and Castle Hill. Shortly afterwards, I saw a similar painting hung in the Tenby Town Council offices.
A few months ago, I was in Jacob’s Ladder, an antiques warehouse at the bottom of St. Mary’s Sttreet in Cardiff, when I saw a framed photograph of the view from St. Catherine’s Fort towards St. Julians Street and Lexden Terrace and on towards the Imperial Hotel. On examing the photograph, I found it was taken by H. Mortimer Allen.
I would be interested to find out more about the Allen family, where their business was and if there are any descendants living in Tenby.
I would be pleased if you could put in the letters page my appeal for some information.
Henry Wilkins,
6Y Llanerch,
Carmarthen.
