At last, the people who live on the housing estate at the top of Grove Hill in Pembroke can look forward to being able to walk safely into town.
For some years, they have been asking for a pavement or safe route along the hill, a narrow, winding road they have to negotiate to take their children to school, go to the shops or make other trips into Pembroke.
In April 2011, Pembroke 21C Community Association visited the estate as part of the community-wide consultation for the Pembroke 2020 Community Plan funded by the Big Lottery People and Places programme. This was the major issue identified on this isolated estate which is served by just two buses a day in the week and none at weekends.
A meeting was called for residents with their local councillor, Police Community Support Officers and other officers from the County Council.
As a result, Pembroke 21C carried out a door to door questionnaire which established that 62 per cent of residents feel unsafe when walking or driving on Grove Hill and several have been involved with a collision or near collision. There are several disabled people living on the estate and lots of families with children who use the hill to take kids to school or playschool, although the main use is for shopping.
The results were put into a report presented to the traffic department of Pembrokeshire County Council last autumn.
Gareth Jones, chair of trustees of Pembroke 21C said: "We are absolutely delighted to have received an assurance from the council that they will install a safe walkway down Grove Hill and that it is in their budget. However, we are somewhat disappointed that it is a long way down the list so the residents will still have to wait. We hope that their local Councillor can get it moved forward but at least they now know that it is coming and that the Council have listened to their concerns."
