Sir, I recently walked the public footpath from the Ridgeway, Saundersfoot to Mill Farm, through field and woodland, then continued along the B4316 towards the school and on into the village via Church Terrace.
Unfortunately, my walk coincided with the end of the school day when congestion around the school was being fed by almost stationary traffic extending from the Mill Farm side of Whitlow junction down the whole of Church Terrace, past the Ridgeway junction and even beyond into the village.
Busy mums and dads were trying to drop their children off at school whilst many other parents and children were walking the route fully exposed to a build-up of CO2 and diesel particle emissions from the vehicles in the queue. For some parents this must happen at least twice a day, every day!
The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority has been considering 11 sites in and around Saundersfoot as likely sites for development - which would more than meet local housing needs. Local need must be provided for, but over-development will have a major impact on the surrounding countryside, the village, school numbers and medial services.
A proposal that fields and woodland north of Whitlow/Castle View be used to provide at least 180 houses will also lead to an inevitable increase in vehicle and foot traffic around Saundersfoot School. More cars, more pedestrians, more congestion, more parking problems, more risk of accidents, more harmful emissions affecting the health and safety of parents and children walking to and from school. Any electric car solution to the problem is a long way off - so don’t hold your breath!
