Vandals that have targeted resurfacing work to enhance two tunnels on the coastal path between Saundersfoot and Wisemans Bridge have been condemned by a local county councillor.
Work began on Monday by Pembrokeshire County Council to lay new surface through the long tunnel of the former colliery railway, after funding had been secured via a Welsh Government grant.
County councillor for Saundersfoot, Clr. Phil Baker said that a specialist contractor would be using shredded, recycled tyres in the top material to provide a durable surface, with the tunnels closed off to the public whilst the work is ongoing.
However, with the work progressing, and due to be completed ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend, Clr. Baker took to social media today (Thursday) to announce that vandals had already damaged the surface.
“The short tunnel has been completed to a high standard, but it is a crying shame that the long tunnel was broken into last night (Wednesday) and 60 per cent of the newly laid surface is damaged beyond repair. The programme to complete and the budget is now at risk.
“PCC will be reporting the matter to Dyfed-Powys Police and I am collecting video footage. A long time coming and ruined in minutes,” he added.
