A man from Caerphilly has been banned from driving after being caught drink driving in Pembroke the morning after a night of boozing.
Thirty-one-year-old Darren Lewis, of Cwrt y Coed, Blakwood, pleaded guilty to driving his Volkswagen Krafter, after exceeding the prescribed limit of alcohol, when he appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Dennis Davies told the court that police pulled over Mr. Lewis at around 8.25 am on the A4075 at Holyland Road on April 5, after he had committed a moving traffic offence.
“Officers could smell alcohol on his breath and he admitted that he had been drinking the night before,” he said.
After his arrest Mr. Lewis gave a reading of 59 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 milliitres of breath at the police station.
Defence solicitor Mike Kelleher told the court that his client had indeed been drinking the night before and felt that he was ok to be driving.
“Clearly he wasn’t, so perhaps that’s a lesson for a lot of people!” said Mr Kelleher.
Magistrates disqualified Mr. Lewis from driving for a period of 14 months and fined him £400 for the offence.
He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £40 victim surcharge.
