Tenby Aces

By Observer Reporter in Athletics

It is great to see that events are starting to come thick and fast as we move into spring, with some events being used as training runs for events planned later in the year. It is great to see newer members taking part and coming up with some great times.

Newport Half

The Newport half marathon was held recently and promised a scenic route, with it starting in the centre of the city and finishing on the Riverfront; it follows a route along the Riverfront path past iconic bridges and on up to Newport Castle, before heading out to Caerleon and back. There were three members taking part, namely Helen Murray, Donna James and Kara Chwistek. All did very well, with Helen coming home in a time of 2:33:12, Donna in a time of 2:51:01 and Kara in a time of 2:06:43. Well done to the three of you.

Pembrokeshire Duathlon

Neyland was the setting recently for the now annual running of the Pembrokeshire Duathlon run by the Pembrokeshire Triathlon Club.

The event is based around the sea-front in Neyland, with the race offering something for athletes of all abilities and ages. The two runs are flat and fast, but the bike route sends you on a few lumps and bumps, but plenty of really fast, flat and downhill sections.

The club had four members taking part, Emil Chwistek, Jamie Silvester, Dai Meyrick and Ryan Semper. All four had good performances, with Emil coming in with times of 1st run 19:40, bike in 40:56 and 2nd run in 10:20 and an overall time of 1:10:56; Ryan coming in with a 1st run time of 21:48, bike in 41:36 and 2nd run in 11:44 and an overall time of 1:15:08; Jamie coming in with a times of 1st run in 21:53, bike in 43:09 and 2nd run in 10:57 and an overall time of 1:15:59; and Dai coming in with a 1st run time of 21:57, bike in 44:19 and 2nd run in 11:42 and an overall time of 1:17:58.

Well done to all who took part, especially Ryan with 1st place in his age group.

Daffodil Ride

The annual Daffodil Ride took place on March 5, and of course it was held in glorious sunshine, the same as it is every year. Well, ok, it was in the same terrible weather that winter cycling brings. The event is now in its 10th year, and being organised by the students from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. The hilly and rural 43-mile route is certainly a great early season challenge.

The following members took part this year: Gareth Rees, Lee Walker, Mat Greener, Julie Andrasko, Mike Lindsey, Kirsty Murray, Adz John, Hayden John, Richard John, Lisa Day and Joe Bowles.

Llanelli Half Marathon

Last weekend saw the running of the Llanelli Half Marathon. With the start and finish at the Parc Y Scarlets, home of Scarlets rugby, it is a great event for any of the Scarlets fans.

The course is a very flat course and great for people trying out a half marathon for the first time, or alternatively for those chasing a new personal best or training for a full marathon later in the year.

The route takes you out towards the National Wetland Centre before joining the magnificent Millennium Coastal Path, the path overlooks Llanelli beach and has breath-taking views of the Loughor estuary and Gower peninsula; you then follow the path to Festival Fields, where you turn and head back along the path to Parc Y Scarlets.

The following members took part: Bethan Osborne, Ceris Hewlings, Emma Richards, Andrea Craig, Jo Brace, Anto O’Hara, Ceire Merrison and supporting the male members of the club, Will Lewis. Emma came in with a time of 1:47:29, Anto in a time of 1:53:21, Will in a time of 1:55:57, Jo and Ceire in a time of 2:13:23, Andrea in a time of 2:19:38, Ceris in a time of 2:20:36 and Bethan in a time of 2:24:22.

A great day out for the members and a few new personal bests - well done all.
